GH2 India Strengthens Green Hydrogen Initiatives in Gujarat with New Partnership

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, July, 2024 - In a significant step towards advancing green hydrogen production in India, the Green Hydrogen Organisation (GH2) in India has forged a new partnership with Gujarat Power Corporation Limited (GPCL), the state’s nodal agency for green hydrogen initiatives. The collaboration was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at accelerating green hydrogen production across the state, a move that promises to significantly boost both technological innovation and sustainable development in the region.

The MoU signing ceremony was conducted in the esteemed presence of Shri Kanubhai Desai, Honourable Minister of Energy for Gujarat, highlighting the state government’s support for renewable energy advancements. Arun Mahesh Babu M S, IAS, Managing Director of GPCL, and Nishaanth Balashanmugam, Country Manager - India, Green Hydrogen Organisation - GH2, signed the MoU, under the watchful eyes of Shri Jai Prakash Shivahare, IAS, Managing Director of Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GUVNL), and Ms. Julia Souder, CEO of the Long Duration Energy Storage Council (LDES Council) and Chair of the Global Renewables Alliance.

A Global Mission Locally Executed

GH2 has been relentlessly working on a global scale to implement green hydrogen as a sustainable solution, particularly in industries where reducing carbon emissions is both critical and challenging. The organisation's efforts encompass a broad range of activities from capacity building and advocacy to market creation. This partnership with GPCL is a pivotal development, aligning with GH2’s mission to promote green hydrogen adoption worldwide.

Gujarat’s Green Hydrogen Ambitions

GPCL has been a proactive entity in the state’s green energy sector, driving numerous initiatives to position Gujarat as a leader in green hydrogen production. The state has committed to an ambitious target of producing over 3 million tons of green hydrogen by 2030. This bold goal underlines Gujarat’s role as a key player in India’s energy transition and its potential impact on the global green hydrogen landscape.

Implications for Sustainable Development

The collaboration between GH2 and GPCL is expected to yield substantial benefits, not only in terms of environmental sustainability but also in economic growth and energy security. By harnessing the potential of green hydrogen, Gujarat aims to enhance its grid stability, integrate renewable energy more effectively, and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

Looking Ahead

This MoU represents just the beginning of a series of strategic moves planned by GH2 and its partners. Through continued collaboration and innovation, GH2 and the Global Renewables Alliance aim to extend their impact, setting the stage for a sustainable energy future that next generations can rely on.

As this partnership unfolds, it will undoubtedly serve as a model for similar initiatives globally, illustrating the critical role of international cooperation and state-level action in the fight against climate change.
