The European Hydrogen Week witnessed an important roundtable on "Navigating Certification and Regulatory Challenges for Green Hydrogen from India." Held in Brussels, the event brought together policymakers, developers, certification bodies, and financial institutions from India and Europe to address the complexities of RFNBO certification and explore pathways for harmonised regulations.

The discussion revolved around India’s unique renewable energy grid and its alignment with EU certification standards. Participants underscored the importance of initiating certification processes early to navigate compliance challenges and adapt project designs.

Key issues discussed included:

  • Temporal correlation: Concerns about post-2030 hourly requirements and their financial implications.
  • Geographical correlation: Calls for tailored regulatory interpretations to account for India’s synchronous grid and long-term PPAs.
  • Policy harmonisation: Strengthening collaboration between Indian and EU policymakers to align renewable energy practices.

Stakeholders highlighted the need for collective representations from Indian developers to EU regulators, emphasising India’s advantages for green hydrogen production. The event also stressed the role of financiers in addressing regulatory uncertainties and ensuring project viability.

This roundtable builds on the growing collaboration between India and the EU in green hydrogen, showcasing a mutual commitment to addressing certification challenges and advancing global hydrogen trade.
