Today, at the Egypt-EU Investment Conference, the Green Hydrogen Organisation (GH2) and Nile University announced the inauguration of the GH2 International Green Hydrogen Centre of Excellence, known as the GH2 Cairo Centre. This initiative aims to lead global efforts in deploying sustainable large-scale green hydrogen projects, particularly in developing and emerging economies.
Approved by Egypt’s National Green Hydrogen Council in February 2024, the GH2 Cairo Centre will be headquartered at Nile University in Cairo. It will focus on capacity building and providing technical assistance on green hydrogen across Egypt, Africa, and globally. With Egypt poised to become a leading producer and exporter of green hydrogen by 2030, leveraging over 30 framework agreements and multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with international partners, the Centre’s establishment marks a pivotal step in accelerating renewable energy and green hydrogen projects.
One of the key objectives of the GH2 Cairo Centre is to expedite the financing of large-scale renewable energy and green hydrogen projects, aiming to mobilise and de-risk investments from both public and private sectors. It will facilitate regional collaboration through the Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA), serving as its Secretariat and promoting cooperation with major export markets including the European Union and Asia.
Scheduled for August 2024, the GH2 Cairo Centre will kick off with the Green Hydrogen Policy Accelerator Training course, jointly organised with the International Solar Alliance under its Green Hydrogen Innovation Centre platform. This underscores the Centre’s commitment to education and stakeholder engagement.
Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for Egypt, highlighted the Centre’s potential to connect global experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and financial institutions. He emphasised its role in advancing green hydrogen deployment and providing sustainable energy solutions.
Sharan Burrow, GH2 Interim Chair, welcomed the partnership with Nile University, affirming the Centre’s critical role in supporting a just transition to green hydrogen in Egypt and beyond. Dr. Andrew Forrest, Executive Chairman of Fortescue, expressed his enthusiasm for the Centre, positioning it to drive innovation and international cooperation in sustainable energy solutions.
Dr. Wael Akl, President of Nile University, highlighted the Centre’s significance in advancing research and development in renewable energy, integrating green hydrogen as a pivotal component for regional and national sustainable development.
Jonas Moberg, CEO of GH2, described the launch as a milestone towards realising Egypt and Africa’s renewable energy and green hydrogen ambitions.
