From 11th to 13th September 2024, GH2 India proudly participated in the International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH) in New Delhi, an event supported by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE). The conference brought together global experts to explore green hydrogen’s future, with GH2 India playing a central role in discussions around certification, youth engagement, and financing.
GH2 India’s Knowledge Partnership in Certification
As a knowledge partner in Session 3C on certification requirements for the green hydrogen value chain, GH2 India contributed to critical conversations on harmonizing global standards. The session covered India’s 2 kg CO₂ per kg hydrogen limit and the importance of unified standards to simplify compliance and reduce costs. India’s two-stage certification process was highlighted as a key mechanism for project financing and sustainability.
Key Takeaways:
- Fragmented certification standards increase costs and complexity for producers.
- India's two-stage certification helps de-risk projects and secure financing.
- Harmonization of global standards is essential for international hydrogen trade.
Quotes from the Session:
- "Aligning global standards is crucial for green hydrogen trade." — Timo Bollerhey, CEO, HINT.CO
- "India's CO₂ threshold now offers a clear certification methodology." — Shri. Abhay Bakre, Mission Director, National Green Hydrogen Mission
GH2 India’s Role in Youth Engagement
GH2 India’s Director, Nishaanth Balashanmugam, joined a Youth Session to inspire future green hydrogen leaders. With speakers such as Olympic medalist Saina Nehwal and Principal Scientific Advisor Prof. Ajay K. Sood, the session focused on decarbonizing sectors like steel and transportation. A youth panel addressed an audience of over 3,000 students, discussing green hydrogen’s transformative potential.
Panel Session on Financing Green Hydrogen
On 13th September, Nishaanth Balashanmugam participated in a panel on financing green hydrogen alongside industry leaders. He emphasized the need for foreign exchange-hedging instruments, lifted restrictions on foreign institutional contributions, and greater involvement from Indian institutional investors. The panel discussed strategies to mobilize climate finance and promote large-scale projects.
